Along the National Road Display

June 23, 2006

The lobby of the Englewood Government Center, located at 333 W. National Road in Englewood, Ohio was the site of an "Along the National Road" exhibit during the 2006 National Road Bicentennial celebration.

Englewood’s Randolph Township Historical Society (RTHS) celebrated the Bicentennial of the signing of the legislation authorizing the construction of the National Road (1806-2006) with photos and a huge multi-media exhibit. This was a cooperative display with the Clay Township and Vandalia- Butler Historical Societies.

Sue Cummings of the RTHS designed ten display boards with current and historic photos of all sections of Route 40/National Road from Englewood Dam to SR 49 (Montgomery County, Ohio).

RTHS members Loren Butterbaugh and Hobert Roberts took color photos of all existing buildings and sites along old Route 40, to document the way it looked in 2006. Prints were put into albums and disk copies were edited into a DVD "Tour of Route 40 Today" by Sue Cummings. Paul Dewey developed an original video about the building of the National Road across Ohio.

From June 15- July 31, 2006 over 1500 visitors visited the displays that were part of the “Along the National Road” historical exhibit in Englewood.

On June 23, 2006, RTHS President Glynn Marsh welcomed guests, including ONRA Board members Cyndie Gerken, Denna Johnson, Ed Kemper, Paul Seibel, Thea Walsh, and Byway Coordinator Kate Hoffmann, to a special National Road program. Refreshments for the evening, which were enjoyed by 200 people, were provided by Liberty Bank.

National Road historian and ONRA Board member, Sylvia Miller gave a kick-off lecture for the exhibit. Her talk, entitled "The Historic National Road: A Trip through Time," included slides and songs about the Road.

Sylvia Miller's presentation was made possible in part by the Ohio Humanities Council.
