Hello National Road Enthusiast

Thank you for your interest in becoming an Ohio National Road Association member.

ONRA has the responsibility to be stewards of history for "The Road That Helped Build America." The Historic National Road was approximately 228 road miles with only six remaining historic stone S bridges and countless other bridges and culverts in assorted conditions.

The Thomas Jefferson administration and congress authorized the first federally funded hard service road in 1806. In 1824, President James Monroe signed a bill authorizing construction in Ohio. On July 4, 1825, ground was broken to start construction. The road reached Zanesville in 1830, Columbus 1833 and Springfield by 1838. The western border of Ohio was finally reached in the 1840’s. The national road continues today to provide transportation services for thousands of people and businesses daily.
